From Attachment to Surrender

Attachment → Surrender

You are here. Allah's guidance reaches you here.

Qur'an

“No affliction visits the earth or yourselves but it is in a Book before We bring it into being. That is indeed easy for Allah. So that you may not grieve for what escapes you, nor exult for what comes your way. And Allah does not like any swaggering braggart.”

Surah al-Ḥadīd (57:22–23)

Personal Reflection

Sometimes I hold tightly to what I love.

A person.
An outcome.
A plan for how I thought things should be.

And when I cannot hold onto it, I struggle.

Maybe surrender is not learning to care less.

Maybe it is learning to care deeply without forgetting that nothing was ever truly mine to control.

I can love what Allah has given me.

I can grieve what I lose.

And still place it back in His hands.

I can hold with love, without holding with fear.

This is the author's own contemplation. It is not tafsīr.

Insight from Tafsīr al-Mīzān

Al-Mīzān draws our attention to the wisdom behind Allah’s reminding us that what reaches us and what passes us by are already within His knowledge.

The purpose is not to make us indifferent. It is to free the heart from being ruled by what it gains and loses.

We may grieve what has passed us by, or rejoice in what has come to us, but neither should become a state that possesses the heart.

When we understand that our affairs are not outside Allah’s knowledge and care, we can meet what comes with greater steadiness.

To surrender is not to stop caring. It is to stop believing that everything must unfold according to my grasp.

Guidance from the Ahlulbayt

“Whoever continually looks at what is in the hands of people, his worry will increase and his anguish will not cease.”

— Imam Jaʿfar al-Ṣādiq (ع), narrating from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ

al-Kāfī, Vol. 2, Book 1, Chapter 126, Hadith 5 · Graded ṣaḥīḥ according to Allāmah al-Majlisī, Mirʾāt al-ʿUqūl

Du'a

رَبِّ إِنِّي لِمَا أَنزَلْتَ إِلَيَّ مِنْ خَيْرٍ فَقِيرٌ

“My Lord, indeed I am in need of whatever good You send down to me.”

Surah al-Qaṣaṣ (28:24)

One step forward

Choose one thing you are holding tightly today.

A person. An outcome. A plan. Something you cannot control.

Name it before Allah.

Then take the next step you are responsible for, and leave what is beyond you in His hands.

Do what is yours to do. Entrust what is not.

Journal Reflection

What am I trying to control that I need to entrust to Allah?

What would it look like to do what is mine to do, and leave the rest in His hands?
