الَّذِينَ قَالَ لَهُمُ النَّاسُ إِنَّ النَّاسَ قَدْ جَمَعُوا لَكُمْ فَاخْشَوْهُمْ فَزَادَهُمْ إِيمَانًا وَقَالُوا حَسْبُنَا اللَّهُ وَنِعْمَ الْوَكِيلُ
“Those to whom people said, ‘The people have gathered against you, so fear them,’ but it only increased them in faith, and they said, ‘Allah is sufficient for us, and He is the best Trustee.’”
Sūrat Āl ʿImrān 3:173
Personal Reflection
The people who gathered against the believers were real. The danger was not imagined. Yet the words of fear, instead of weakening them, only increased them in faith. This is because their confidence did not rest on the size of the threat or their own strength, but on the One who is greater than both. The phrase ḥasbunā Allāh wa niʿma al-Wakīl is not a denial of difficulty; it is the decision to place the outcome entirely in Allah’s hands.

Insight from Tafsīr al-Mīzān
ʿAllāmah Ṭabāṭabāʾī explains that the believers were confronted with words intended to increase their fear. Instead of weakening them, those words increased their faith because their confidence rested in Allah rather than in outward circumstances.
Their statement, ‘Hasbunallāhu wa niʿma al-Wakīl’ — ‘Allah is sufficient for us, and He is the best Trustee’ — was not merely a phrase upon the tongue. It was an expression of complete reliance (tawakkul), placing the outcome entirely in Allah’s hands after fulfilling their own responsibility.
True reliance upon Allah does not remove hardship; it removes the heart’s dependence upon anything besides Him.

حَسْبِيَ اللَّهُ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ ۖ عَلَيْهِ تَوَكَّلْتُ ۖ وَهُوَ رَبُّ الْعَرْشِ الْعَظِيمِ
“Allah is sufficient for me. There is no god but Him. Upon Him I have relied, and He is the Lord of the Mighty Throne.”

The next time you feel fear or anxiety today, pause before reacting and quietly say: ḥasbunā Allāh wa niʿma al-Wakīl — ‘Allah is sufficient for us, and He is the best Trustee.’ Then take your next step with trust in Allah.
