From Restlessness to Tranquility

Restlessness → Tranquility

You are here. Allah's guidance reaches you here.

Qur'an

Those who have faith and whose hearts find rest in the remembrance of Allah. Surely, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest.

Surah al-Raʿd (13:28)

Personal Reflection

The restless heart is searching in the right way for the right thing in the wrong places. Everything else it reaches for is smaller than it is. The verse begins with alā — a call to attention, as though the answer has been in the room the whole time. Tranquility is not the absence of trouble but the presence of the One the heart was shaped for.

This is the author's own contemplation. It is not tafsīr.

Insight from Tafsīr al-Mīzān

ʿAllāmah Ṭabāṭabāʾī explains that the tranquility mentioned in this verse is not simply a passing feeling of calm. It is the settled peace that comes when the heart recognizes Allah as its true refuge and places its trust in Him.

The remembrance (dhikr) of Allah is more than words upon the tongue. It is a living awareness of His presence, His wisdom, and His promise. As this awareness deepens, the heart becomes steady, no longer overwhelmed by the changing conditions of the world.

True tranquility is therefore not found in changing one’s circumstances, but in turning one’s heart toward Allah.

Guidance from the Ahlulbayt

Allah, through His justice and fairness, has placed comfort and tranquility in certainty and contentment, and He has placed anxiety and sorrow in doubt and discontent.

Du'a

رَبَّنَا أَفْرِغْ عَلَيْنَا صَبْرًا وَثَبِّتْ أَقْدَامَنَا وَانصُرْنَا عَلَى الْقَوْمِ الْكَافِرِينَ

Our Lord, pour upon us patience, make our feet firm, and grant us victory over the disbelieving people.

Surah al-Baqarah (2:250)

One step forward

Before sleeping tonight, spend one minute in complete silence. Take a slow breath. Quietly repeat: أَلَا بِذِكْرِ اللَّهِ تَطْمَئِنُّ الْقُلُوبُ — “Surely, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest.” Then simply sit with Allah for one minute.
