Qur'an
وَإِذَا سَأَلَكَ عِبَادِي عَنِّي فَإِنِّي قَرِيبٌ ۖ أُجِيبُ دَعْوَةَ الدَّاعِ إِذَا دَعَانِ ۖ فَلْيَسْتَجِيبُوا لِي وَلْيُؤْمِنُوا بِي لَعَلَّهُمْ يَرْشُدُونَ
“When My servants ask you about Me, indeed I am near. I answer the call of the one who calls upon Me whenever he calls upon Me. So let them respond to Me and believe in Me so that they may be rightly guided.”
Sūrat al-Baqara (2:186)
Personal Reflection
There are moments when Allah can feel distant… Not because He has moved away, but because our hearts have become occupied with everything except Him. We search for closeness in people, places, achievements, and distractions, hoping they will quiet the longing within us. Yet this verse gently reminds us that Allah was never far to begin with. Before we take a step toward Him, He tells us: "Indeed, I am near." Perhaps the journey is not from Allah's distance to His nearness. Perhaps it is from our perception of distance to the reality of His nearness.
This is the author's own contemplation. It is not tafsīr.
Insight from Tafsīr al-Mīzān
Allamah Tabataba'i explains that this verse is unique in its wording. Elsewhere in the Qur'an, when people ask the Prophet (ﷺ) a question, Allah often instructs him to reply by saying, "Say..." Here, however, Allah answers directly: "Indeed, I am near."
This direct response beautifully reflects the closeness of Allah to His servants. There is no barrier between the sincere caller and the One who hears every supplication.
Yet the verse also reminds us that this relationship is reciprocal. Just as Allah answers those who call upon Him, He invites His servants to respond to Him through faith, obedience, and trust.
Nearness to Allah is not about reducing the distance between Him and us—it is about awakening to the reality that He has always been near.

Then he continues to seek nearness to Me through recommended acts until I love him. When I love him… whenever he calls upon Me, I answer him; and whenever he asks of Me, I give to him.'”

Du'a
رَبَّنَا آتِنَا مِن لَّدُنكَ رَحْمَةً وَهَيِّئْ لَنَا مِنْ أَمْرِنَا رَشَدًا
“Our Lord, grant us mercy from Yourself, and prepare for us right guidance in our affair.”
